The last time the Tour de France visited Bergerac was in 2014. In theory, that stage was perfect for a bunch sprint, but in reality Ramunas Navardauskas powered to victory after a late attack. On a hill in the finale, Côte de Monbazillac, the Lithuanian rider attacked and he managed to hold off the chasing peloton.
Is this going to be the recipe for success in 2017, too? Probably not. The finale of the 10th stage of La Grande Boucle is not hilly at all. In fact, the last hill (modest, 4th category) is crested with 40 kilometres remaining. So that’s plenty of time for the sprint teams to take control and launch their rockets.
In the 2nd stage and 6th stage Marcel Kittel outsprinted Arnaud Démare and André Greipel, while the German bested in a photo finish sprint in stage 7. The 4th stage was won by Arnaud Démare ahead of Kristoff and Greipel.
Démare left the Tour de France after finishing out of time in stage 9.
