Giro 2016: Route and stages

The 2016 Giro d'Italia was won by Vincenzo Nibali. After he collapsed earlier in the race, he came back in the last three days. In the ultimate mountain stage he attacked on the penultimate climb, the Lombardia, to dethrone Esteban Chaves. The Colombian ended the Giro d'Italia as runner-up, while Alejandro Valverde finished in third.

The Route

May 6th, the 2016 Giro d'Italia did start in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, with a short individual time trial. Stages 2 and 3 were on Dutch soil also before a transport on the first rest day took the caravan to the south of Italy. The first Grand Tour of the season totals 60 kilometres of individual time trialing and offers seven mountain stages. Nijmegen - Arnhem

Sunday, May 8, 2016 – In the 3rd stage of the Giro d'Italia riders face a 190 kilometres course from Nijmegen to Arnhem. It is not stage 2 in reverse as the route now bends eastwards while the Arnhem -> Nijmegen race explored the area to the west of both Dutch cities.

Catanzaro – Praia a Mare

Tuesday, May 10, 2016 – After the transport from the Netherlands stage 4 of the 2016 Giro d'Italia is the first on Italian soil, leading from Catanzaro to Praia a Mare. The course in the south of Italy is 200 kilometres, while the finale is marked by a series of short climbs and eventually a drop.
