Giro 2016 Route stage 5: Praia a Mare – Benevento
Once the flag is dropped, roads are going up until the peak of the day is reached after 35 kilometres in the saddle - Fortino is located at an elevation of 783 metres. The next 50 kilometres are on high plains and then its time for rolling roads. Uphill, downhill for quite a while, before the final 40 kilometres are mostly flat.
The finale in Benevento is on narrow and quite curvy streets. A sharp turn 1,200 metres before the line takes the riders to a cobbled uphill section at 3.4% in the last kilometre.
Last year, the Giro was in Benevento also. Stage 9 left here for a stage teaming with hills. In the end, Tiralongo was strongest of a group of escapees.
In 2009 it was the last occasion that Benevento was arrival town. Michele Scarponi powered to victory.
At the line, time bonuses at 10, 6 and 4 seconds lay waiting, while intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds each.
