The lead group is down to 18 riders when they reach the second summit of the day: Mikaël Cherel, Damien Touzé, Jay Vine, Mark Padun, Pelayo Sánchez, Julen Amezqueta, Andrea Bagioli, Lawson Craddock, Magnus Cort, Antonio Jesus Soto, Anthony Roux, Andreas Kron, Robert Stannard, Nico Denz, Fabio Aru, Quinn Simmons, Jan Polanc and Rui Oliveira. They open up a maximum gap of 3 minutes.

Approximately 50 kilometres before the finish Simmons, Touzé, Padun, Kron, Roux, Soto, Craddock, Cort, Bagioli and Oliveira push on together.

Their lead has fallen to 30 seconds when Simmons goes solo with 34 kilometres remaining. Oliveira rejoins him before Craddock, Kron, Cort, Roux and Bagioli also bridge across.
