Race report
After 20 kilometres of hard racing the breakway takes shape. Giulio Ciccone is the initiator and he tackles the first climb, Passo San Pellegrino, in the company of Mathieu van der Poel, Sam Oomen, Thymen Arensman, Mauri Vansevenant, Alessandro Covi, Sylvain Moniquet, Davide Formolo, Domen Novak, Gijs Leemreize, Antonio Pedrero, Edoardo Zardini, Lennard Kämna, Andrea Vendrame and Davide Ballerini.

The lead group opens up a gap of 6 minutes, which falls to 5 minutes in the foothills of the Passo Pordoi.

Covi goes solo on this year’s Cima Coppi climb. He reaches the summit 1.30 minutes before the first chasers, Formolo, Novak, Pedrero, Kämna, Ciccone, Leemreize, Oomen, and Arensman.

While approaching Passo Fedaia Covi extends his lead to more than 2 minutes clear, while Ballerini regains contact with the chasers. The Italian is dropped on the early slopes. As is Oomen.

Covi enters the steep sector of the Fedaia 2 minutes ahead of the first chasers, Arensman, Ciccone and Novak. Then the Slovene leaves his companions behind. He closes in fast.

When Hindley strikes in the GC group Carapaz is the only riders to follow the move. They join Kämna, who keeps pulling for his leader until Carapaz cracks. The Australian pushes on alone.

Novak’s catch-up race stops at 30 seconds, so Covi solos to victory. Meanwhile Hindley powers on to move into the maglia rosa.
