Giro 2017 Favourites stage 1: Sprint for maglia rosa

The 1st stage in the Giro d'Italia features three climbs, but it's doubtful if this will hinder a bunch sprint. Who are favourite to win the stage and grab the first pink jersey? (Slideshow route/profile)

The course of the 1st stage of the Giro d’Italia is mostly flat, still it takes in three 4th category climbs. The first two are crested with more than 110 kilometres left to race, so that’s totally harmless. Possibly some teams will want to pick up the pace on the third ascent to drop pure sprinters. But the 3.25 kilometres climb to the village of San Pantaleo is crested with 20 kilometres remaining, which should be enough for damage control by sprint teams.

It’s safe to say we can expect a clash of sprint trains in the streets of Olbia.
