On the Mendola Ilnur Zakarin attacks and he is accompanied by Kangert and Lopez Garcia. Ulissi hooks up and Zakarin let’s go. Jungels and Firsanov joins the front of the race.

Valverde et al put pressure on Kruijswijk but he doesn’t blink. When Nibali attacks just under the top he joins him a moment before the drop, along with Valverde, Zakarin and Dombrowski. Chaves and Majka are dropped.

Dombrowski finds himself in the chasing group at the foot of the Fai della Paganella. They are 45 seconds down. Chaves opens the chase without delay, Pozzovivo and Majka on his wheel.

On the higher slopes Kruijswijk wards off attacks with ease. After another Valverde acceleration the Spaniard is at the front with Zakarin and the man in pink, while Nibali bows his head. Chaves, Pozzovivo and Majka join the toothless Shark, who is dropped at the steepest slopes under the top.
