Tour of Oman 2014 Results 3rd stage: Froome attacks, Greipel wins

A rolling 145 kilometres today led to talk of possible attacks in the GC battle and Chris Froome didn't disappoint, attacking in the last 5 kilometres. But the move was shut out in the last kilometre and Andre Greipel sprinted to his second stage win of this year's race, reclaiming the leaders jersey in the process. (Slideshow route/profile)

The day started with 4 escapees, Maaskant, Boem, Ista and Wallays, breaking free of the peloton early on but never building a gap of more than 3 minutes. The peloton took things easy early on with the pace for the first hour's racing on the flat just 37 kilometres per hour.

The intensity eventually picked up and the breakaway was caught with 15 kilometres remaining. Dario Cataldo led the peloton over the final climb of Al-Jissah where Chris Froome then decided to stretch his legs and drew an immediate reaction from cobbled classics favourites Cancellara, Stybar and Sagan.

Lotto-Belisol worked hard to bring things back together and their work was repaid with Greipel out-sprinting Sagan for his 5th win of the season and his 2nd in Oman. He also regains the leaders jersey that he lost in yesterday's stage.
