Tour Down Under 2014 Route stage 1: Nuriootpa - Angaston

Tour Down Under 2014 Stage 1 Menglers HillOn January 21th Tour Down Under 2014 starts with a relatively simple and short leg of 135 kilometers. Nice scenery, the 'country side' around Adelaide, South-Australia. Riders make three local laps and just before the finish line the face a modest hurdle: Menglers Hill. (Slideshow route/profile)

Nuriootpa is surrounded by wine yards, so aficionados of a good glass are on the right spot here. Apart from that, there is really nothing much going on in this tiny town in South Australia, with a population of 4500.

After the start riders make two laps on a circuit of 45 kilometers. The next lap has the same length, but apart from the beginning, which is identical, they take a different route. At 12 kilometer before the end there is a slight surprise: Menglers Hill (photo), a 2.1 kilometer climb with the summit at 428 meters above sea level. The height difference is 149 meters, which means an average gradient of 7%.

Two years ago the first stage of the Tour Down Under finished in Angaston as well. Home rider Matthew Goss won the bunch sprint.

The finish of the stage will be around 2.30 pm (ACST)
