Giro Rosa 2019: Van Vleuten flies up the mountain to take pink

The Giro Rosa serves the first summit finish on the fifth day of action. Annemiek van Vleuten solos to victory with a long-range attack from the foot of the final climb. She puts 3 minutes into her rivals to take the pink jersey. (Slideshow route/profile)

Race report
The peloton disintegrates on the first climb before a group of 45 riders comes back together in the valley. Then Nikola Nosková jumps clear to race to a lead of 2 minutes. Leah Kirchmann and Paulina Rooijakkers go after her inside the last 30 kilometres. The Czech rider waits for the duo and with three they push on.

Kirchmann and Rooijakkers tackle the last climb together, before Annemiek van Vleuten goes after them. She gobbles them up 8 kilometres from the finish to continue to a lead of 3 minutes.

Van Vleuten is the new leader on GC, while Kasia Niewiadoma drops to second place.
