Race report
At km 13 Moreno Hofland, Dries Devenyns, Eugert Zhupa, Jérémy Roy and Jan Barta jump clear. They fight for some 80 kilometres, but the gap never widens to much more than half a minute and eventually they are brought back.

Barbin, Dillier, Molard, Shalunov, Gaviria, Janse van Rensburg, Battaglin, Deignan, Petilli and Amezqueta are next. The ten race to a lead of more than 2 minutes, but once again, the peloton starts chasing them down. On the first climb, Miragolo San Salvatore, the gap is down to less than 1 minute when the front group is halved with Janse van Rensburg, Barbin, Molard and Amezqueta remaining. Rolland tries to bridge across, while Barbin and Amezqueta can’t follow the pace. Luis León Sánchez attacks from the main group just before the top.

Atop Rolland is 40 seconds down on the leaders and Sánchez re-joins a little later. In the descent Quintana crashes, but he is not injured and goes on.

On the climb to Selvino Rolland and Sánchez reunite with the leaders and when cresting the five are 37 seconds ahead of the main group. In the descent Formolo, Woods and Elissonde hit the deck, while Kangert hits an unmarked sign and crashes badly in the flat run-in to Bergamo.

On the sharp climb to Bergamo Alta Rolland is the last escapee is reeled in when Jungels powers up the hill, while Nibali goes on the counter-attack just before the top. The Shark of Messina is the first to plunge down, yet the other favourites jump to his wheel.

The race comes down to a sprint of GC contenders with Bob Jungels outpowering the bunch. Nairo Quintana comes in second, Thibaut Pinot in third – thus taking time bonuses-, while maglia rosa Tom Dumoulin finishes safely in the group.
