Race report
Attacks from the gun, but it takes 15 kilometres for the breakaway to establish itself with Robert Stannard, Stan Dewulf, Tosh Van der Sande, Benjamin Dyball, Angel Madrazo, Rui Costa, Jasper Philipsen, Julien Simon and Rémi Cavagna joining forces. Philipsen and Van der Sande drop back before the others open up a gap of more than 5 minutes.

Movistar sets the pace from the Puerto de la Rasa onward and brings the attackers back on the early slopes of the finishing climb.

Großschartner, Valverde and Soler are the first top 10 riders who can’t follow the pace in the last 4 kiometres.

Carthy attacks a little later. Kuss goes with him. Leader Carapaz brings the other GC contenders back to their wheel.

When Kuss strikes Carapaz counters with Roglic in his wheel. Martin, Carthy and Vlasov track them down before the Russian continues on his own.

Roglic gobbles up Vlasov under the flamme rouge and Carapaz also makes it across. But then Roglic strikes again and this time it is the winning move.

The Slovene wins the race 13 seconds ahead of the maillot rojo. Which is also the gap in the GC, only the other way around.
