Vuelta 2019 Favourites stage 17: Fast men in longest race

Sam Bennett 2019 - Vuelta 2019 Favourites stage 17: Fast men in longest raceStage 17 is the only race on this Vuelta with a distance of more than 200 kilometres. Obviously, it is also the longest race. Although not entirely flat, the distance is the most challenging aspect, so a bunch sprint is the most likely outcome. (Slideshow route/profile)

Sam Bennett is on stellar form. He crushed the opposition with three stage wins at the BinckBank Tour out of four chances. In Spain he continued with a clear victory in the Alicante stage on the third day of action, while he outpowered his rivals in the crash-marked 14th stage.

Normally, Gaviria would have been the Irish champion’s most difficult rival. Both the Colombian and the Irishmen know what it is to win Grand Tour stages, but Gaviria’s 2019 campaign has been injury-blighted. He never was in contention in the three Vuelta sprints until now.

Young Fabio Jakobsen is the only sprinter to outgun Bennett in Spain. The Dutch champions bested the Irishmen in a millimetres-sprint on the fourth day of action.
