Vuelta 2019 Favourites stage 14: Back to the fast men

Sam Bennett 2019 - Vuelta 2019 Favourites stage 14: Back to the fast menSprinters who have some energy left in the tank after two tough mountain stages should grab the opportunity on La Vuelta's 14th stage. A climb with 22 kilometres remaining is the only obstacle that could possibly thwart their ambitions in an otherwise flat stage. (Slideshow route/profile)

The ascent we are talking about is the Alto de la Madera, an obstacle of 8 kilometres long with an average gradients of 3.5%. Compared to some of the uphill drags the riders have to endure in Spain, that’s shallow. On the other hand, no matter how shallow the gradients, if you tackle a climb at a high pace it is going to hurt. So expect the teams with tough sprinters to speed up on the Madera to try to get rid of the pure sprinters.

The riders descend the Alto de la Madera to continue onto a pan-flat finale.

Sam Bennet is on a roll. He continued his winning streak on the BinckBank Tour (three stages) with a clear victory on the 3rd stage of La Vuelta. Yet, young Fabio Jakobsen bested him the next day in a millimetre sprint.
