Volta ao Algarve 2025: Double win Christen at the Fóia summit

Race report
It takes a while for the break to take shape, but eventually, Tobias Bayer, Brent Van Moer, Fábio Costa, Leangel Rubén Linarez, Guilherme Lino, André Carvalho, Hugo Nunes, and Germán Nicolás Tivani manage to forge a gap. The eight carve out a lead of over 4 minutes.

On the climb to Marmelete, only Bayer, Van Moer, Nunes, and Tivani remain in the lead. Their advantage drops below 2 minutes as they climb, which is a preview of what’s to come, as they are caught well before the final climb.

On the climb to Pomba, the peloton thins out significantly, while it is Laurens De Plus who slips away just before the finish climb. Ben Tulett, Rémy Rochas, Jan Christen, Luca Vergallito, and Neilson Powless go with him.

Rochas and Tulett are dropped, while Christen accelerates with 2 kilometres left to climb. The others claw their way back, before Christen gives it another dig under the flamme rouge. This time he is clear and he forges on to victory. His teammate João Almeida rejoins him just before the finish line, but grants the young Swiss the stage win and leader’s jersey.
