Departure place Glenelg hosts the Tour Down Under for the third time in a row. Two years ago the race led to Mount Barker (Steele Von Hoff took the sprint), while Campbelltown was the goal in 2016 with Simon Gerrans powering to the stage win and leader’s jersey.
This time the route leads to Victor Harbor. Usually stages leading to the coastal town boil down to a bunch sprint. Gerrans took the flowers last year, while André Greipel sprinted to victory in 2012 and 2014.
There is little reason to believe that stage 3 in the 2017 Tour Down Under will see a different scenario. Sellicks Hill, crested after 45 kilometres, is the only hurdle on the Glenelg-Victor Harbor route before a flat local round in the arrival place is raced five times.
Time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds lay waiting on the line.
