Race report
The fact that there is still no break at the top of the Col du Pillon inspires Mathieu van der Poel to strike in the descent. Hermann Pernsteiner and Sergio Samitier go with the yellow jersey.

Back in the Rhône valley Claudio Imhof bridges across and the four leaders widen the gap almost 4 minutes.

The attack is history with 28 kilometre remaining. Moments later the peloton enters the first of the two finale climbs. Antwan Tolhoek heads out alone before Esteban Chaves tracks him down. The Colombian forges on alone.

Just before the summit Fuglsang attacks from the GC group. Chaves reaches the first summit 36 seconds ahead of the Dane.

At the foot of the climb to the line the two are together. Carapaz, Alaphilippe, Woods, Pozzovivo, Uran, Schachmann, Oomen, Tolhoek, Dunbar and Hamilton are chasing.

Fuglsang goes solo inside the last 6 kilometres, while Carapaz attacks from the GC group with 4 kilometres to climb. The Ecuadorian tracks down the Dane with an impressive effort.

The race comes down to a two-up sprint with Fuglsang opening early. Too early. Carapaz follows his move and overhauls him in the last metres.

The chasing group finishes 39 seconds later and the number one and two of the stage are now also first and second on GC Schchmann stil sits in third, while Alaphilippe drops to fourth after being docked 20 seconds for taking bottle in the last 10 kilometres.
