Race results
With 20 kms done 24 riders are off. Antwan Tolhoek is the first to crest the Furka-pas, thus cementing his KOM lead. At the top the peloton is 2’30” down.
While climbing the Gotthard the gap goes down to under 2 minutes. A group of eight riders leave their companions and Atapuma is the first to crest.
In the drop Wellens goes solo. Polanc, Atapuma, Sioutsou, Dupont, Anacone and Berhane join him. They are 1 minute ahead of the peloton when hitting the closing climb. At the flank the gap grows a little and with 7 kms remaining Atapuma leaves.
Wellens is the last chaser to be reeled in with 3 kms left, while Barguil opens the chase with 1.5 kms left. He comes close, but not close enough, so the Colombian takes the win.
In the group with GC favourites 22-year old Pierre Latour sprints to third place, taking 2 seconds and a time bonus of 4 seconds, which is just enough for the leader’s jersey.
