Race report
On the Col de la Tourne, Silvan Dillier, Luke Plapp, Roland Thalmann and Ben Zwiehoff break away, with Stefan Küng and Archie Ryan bridging across a little later.

Attacks keep flying, and only Zwiehoff stays out front, with Hugh Carthy taking the place of the other five. At the back of the peloton, race leader Matthew Brennan is dropped.

Zwiehoff cements his KOM lead at the summit. Initially, he drops Carthy on the descent, but the Brit overhauls him, and the German winds up in a chasing group with Raúl García Pierna and Julien Bernard. Welay Hagos Berhe later joins them, and the five attackers come together on the Mauborget. And again, Zwiehoff is the first rider to reach the summit.

Bernard and Carthy drops the other three on the Les Grattes climb. They crest the climb 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.

That gap has been halved by the time Carthy goes solo on the final climb. Just after the summit, it’s game over for the Brit.

All the GC contenders are present in the first group. Juan Pedro López and Jay Vine break away, but are brought back again.

Alex Baudin is the next to go. He is initially joined by Junior Lecerf and Juan Pedro López, before Lennert Van Eetvelt and Lorenzo Fortunato make the junction as well. They open up a lead of well over a minute on the chasers.

In the closing kilometres, Fortunato launches the decisive attack. After a brief hesitation, Van Eetvelt gives chase, but it’s just enough for the Italian to storm to victory. Two seconds later, Baudin sprints to second place, which earns him the leader’s jersey.
