On the other hand, with strong winds barrelling down the Rhône Valley echelons are not unlikely to happen in this part of France. Who are the favourites to win stage 12 at the Tour? The area around Nîmes is not only known for the hottest summer of France, but also for weather phenomena such as the the Mistral, Tramontana and Sirocco. In short, strong winds are not uncommon.

Mark Cavendish will not mind. He is the fastest finisher on this Tour and he rides for the specialist in terms of navigating the echelons, Deceuninck-QuickStep.

Given the relatively flat and exposed course with a possibility of echelons, we estimate that Cavendish has splendid credentials.
