Race report
Tanel Kangert is the first rider to open up a proper gap. Nicolas Edet rejoins him, only to be dropped later. He winds up in a group with KOM leader Julian Alaphilippe, Jésus Herrada and Kristijan Durasek before being dropped again. Chasing further back is a 20-man group with Alejandro Valverde, Adam Yates, Daniel Martínez, Simon Geschke, Gorka Izagirre, Marc Soler, Rafal Majka, Omar Fraile, Franco Pellizotti, Gregor Mühlberger, and Daniel Navarro.
Kangert is the first rider over the top with the group Alaphilippe 15 seconds behind. Soler, Valverde, Majka, Fraile and Navarro reach the crest with a 1 minute deficit. The peloton is 3 minutes down on the sole leader, while the other chasers are somewhere in beween.
Durasek and Alaphilippe rejoin Kangert on the descent before they tackle the Col de Val Louron-Azet with a stable lead. AG2R sets the pace in the peloton and the lead goes down.
Alaphilippe is the first rider over the top ahead of Kangert and Navarro. Majka, Valverde, Martínez and Fraile crest the top after 25 seconds and the peloton is 2 minutes down on the leaders.
On descent Alaphilippe and Kangert head out together and they widen the gap with the group Valverde to more than 1 minute. The polka dot man drops on the early slopes, while Daniel Martin and Nairo Quintana strike in the GC group before the Colombian heads out alone.
Roglic accelerates with Froome on his wheel. Dumoulin claws his way back and regains contact slowly and steadily. Thomas, Bardet, Kruijswijk, Landa and Bernal are the only riders left in his wheel. Poels makes it back a little later.
With 10 kms to climb Kangert is 1.30 ahead of the maillot jaune group. Quintana and Majka gobble him up 8.5 kms before the top. Dan Martin is chasing at 20 seconds.
Quintana goes solo with 6.5 kms to climb. Bardet can’t follow the pace in the GC group.
Dumoulin ups the pace 2 kms before the top. Thomas, Roglic and Kruijswijk are the only riders still in touch, while Froome is dropped. Former ski jumper Roglic smells the podium and kicks. He is not able to dispatch Thomas and Dumoulin is dragging it back with Kruijswijk a little further behind.
Quintana climbs to victory, 28 seconds ahead of Martin. Maillot jaune Thomas kicks in the final 500 metres and crosses the line 5 seconds before Roglic and Dumoulin. He extends his lead to his nearest rivals with 9 seconds thanks to a time bonus, while Froome drops to third, 32 seconds behind the new runner-up Dumoulin. Roglic now sits in fourth, 16 seconds down on the title defender.
