Tour de France 2017 Route stage 5: Vittel – La Planche des Belles Filles

Tour de France 2017 stage 5Wednesday, 5 July 2017 – At 160.5 kilometres, stage 5 in the Tour de France leads from Vittel to La Planche des Belles Filles in the Vosges Mountains. Mostly played out on rolling roads, the finale is a monstrous climb with steepest sectors of 20%.

La Planche des Belles Filles was first climbed in the 2012 Tour de France with Chris Froome powering to his first stage win in La Grande Boucle. Two years later the steep mountain was in the road book again. This time Vincenzo Nibali took the win.

La Planches des Belles Filles is a 5.9 kilometres toil at 8.5%. The climb shows no mercy from bottom to top, yet the steepest sector is in the finale when the riders face a grueling 20%. It’s there Froome attacked in 2012 to escape to victory.

After leaving Vittel the peloton travels on rolling roads until they reach Côte d’Esmoulières and Col des Croix with around 100 kilometres done. Hills, for sure, but compared to the closing climbs these are merely viaducts.

The first three riders on the line take time bonuses at 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
