Tour de France 2016 Route stage 16: Moirans-en-Montagne – Bern (Swi)

Tour de France 2016 stage 16Monday, July 18, 2016 – In stage 16 the pack heads for Switzerland. Starting in Moirans-en-Montagne, France, the course takes the riders in 209 kilometres to Bern. A transition stage, bringing chances for both escapees and sprinters.

Moirans-en-Montagne is situated in the Jura Mountains. It’s a tiny place that is hosting La Grande Boucle for the first time ever.

With an area of 350 kilometres long and 70 kilometres wide, the Jura Mountains is home to plenty of tough climbs, but not so in stage 16. Yet the riders are traversing the mountain range. While they are racing at an elevation of 426 metres to 902 metres AMSL, there is just one category 4 climb to be crested. Côte de Mühleberg is a 1.2 kilometre climb at 4.8%.

The finale is really something to look forward to. Effectively, this is the whole stage compressed into 5 kilometres. Going up and down, a 600 metres climb at 6.5% lead to a last kilometre that’s completely flat.

After the arrival in Bern, the riders will enjoy a rest day, which is something they could definitely use, as the closing week will be an attrition of climbing stages.

The first three riders on the line take time bonuses at 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
