Tour de France 2016 Route stage 11: Carcassonne – Montpellier

Tour de France 2016 stage 11Wednesday, July 13, 2016 – At 162.5 kilometres, stage 11 of the 2016 Tour de France takes the peloton from Carcassonne to Montpellier. The route is on flat to rolling roads, so chances are Montpellier will live up to its name as a sprinter's paradise.

After Mont Saint-Michel, medieval fortress Carcassonne is the second touristic attraction that serves as a departure town. After leaving the ramparts the pack cruises on flat to rolling terrain to Montpellier. Only two chances for KOM aspiring riders to grab points, both on category 4 climbs in the first 60 kilometres of racing. Subsequently no serious climbs, so this one should be for the sprinters.

Montpellier is an experienced Tour de France host. La Grande Boucle visited the city in the South of France on 31 occasions, predominantly as an arrival place. After the race the riders can go to their hotels without delay, as stage 12 leaves here.

The last two Tour de France stages finishing in Montpellier were won André Greipel (2013) and Mark Cavendish (2011).

The two KOM climbs en route: Côte de Minerve after 38 kilometres and Côte de Villespassans after 57 kilometers.

The first three riders on the line take time bonuses at 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
