Race report
Mattia Bais and Mads Würtz Schmidt are the first attackers before Benjamin Thomas and Emil Vinjebo bridge across. Vinjebo can’t follow the pace and is joined by Marco Canola. Together the two rejoin the lead group.
The five open up a maximum gap of more than 9 minutes.
Würtz Schmidt goes alone on the finish climb, while Geraint Thomas goes after him in the last 7 kilometres. Pogacar rejoins the Welshman en when the two catch the lone attacker – 5 kilometres before the finish – the Tour de France Champion heads out alone.
Van Aert tracks down Thomas before Bernal strikes. Landa and Yates rejoin the Colombian. The Briton leave heads out alone, while Van Aert tracks the other two down. Bernal drops back.
Pogacar holds off Yates by 6 seconds to move into the overall race lead.
