Race report
Attacks are flying from the start. Chaves, Bouwman, De Gendt, Vendrame, Peters, Masnada, Antunes, De La Parte, Kangert, Neilands, Maestri and Conci open up a gap on the Passo della Mendola, while Brambilla, Conti, Jungels, Bakelants, Hamilton (Chris) and Formolo go after them to bridge across in the descent.

Bakelants goes solo on the climb to Elvas, while De Gendt and Neilands go after him on the ascent to Terento. Brambilla, Masnada, Antunes, Conti, Formolo, Peters and Hamilton track down the two chasers and they rejoin Bakelants. Conci jumps across in the descent before all leaders regroup in the valley.

Peters goes solo with 15 kilometers remaining. He opens up a gap of 1 minute before Chaves, Neilands and Conti go after him on the final climb, but without success.

Landa strikes in the main group and Carthy bridges across. The Spaniard drops the young Briton, while Carapaz senses a moment of weakness in Nibali and leaves him behind. Roglic can’t follow either.

Once again, the Movistar-riders put time into their rivals. Carapaz leads the overal almost 2 minutes ahead of Nibali and Roglic is 2.16 minutes in arrears. Landa is closing in on the podium as he sits 47 seconds behind the Slovenian.
