Giro 2025 Favourites stage 7: First mountain top finish

Wout Poels - Giro 2025 Favourites stage 7:foto: Cor VosStage 7 of the Giro d’Italia is a tough test: 3,500 metres of climbing and a summit finish with brutally steep final kilometres. Is that enough to spark a battle between the GC contenders, or could a breakaway artist seize the day? (Slideshow route/profile)

Let’s put it differently: whether the GC contenders will test each other on the final climb is not really a question — it’s a given. The real question is: will they be doing so in the fight for the stage win?

The route certainly sets the stage for a thrilling showdown. It’s a tough day in the saddle, featuring punishing ascents such as the 22-kilometre-long Vado della Forcella, before finishing atop a climb that stretches 11.9 kilometres at 5.5%. The sting is in the tail, with the final 2.7 kilometres rising at 9.1%.

Nothing is set in stone in cycling, but we expect the breakaway to be given some leeway before the GC fireworks erupt on the final slopes. Wout Poels is the kind of rider who thrives on steep gradients — and should he pull it off, he’d complete his trilogy of stage wins in the Tour, Vuelta, and Giro.
