Tom Dumoulin returns to Grand Tour racing in the Giro d’Italia. Arguably, the former GC winner is the man to beat on the Budapest course. The silver medalist of Tokyo stormed into pink during a Giro ITT three times before – in 2016 (first day), in 2017 (last day), and in 2018 (first day). In 2019, however, he didn’t make it into the top 5. And that course was similar to the 2nd stage of the Giro…
The route in Budapest is fairly straightforward. After almost 8 flat kilometres through the city centre the riders tackle a 1.3 kilometres climb at 5% to the old town overlooking the Danube River.
Obviously, Dumoulin is not the only chrono specialist in the Giro. Other strong time trialist on the start list are Jan Tratnik, João Almeida, Matteo Sobrero, and Dumoulin’s team mates Tobias Foss and Edoardo Affini.
