The Giro d’Italia’s 10th stage is extremely flat. The lowest point is 3 metres above sea level and the highest lies at 35 metres. No indentations, no raised areas. This is a sprinter’s dream come true.
The fast stage between Ravenna and Modena provides the sprinters a huge opportunity. Anything special to tell them in the bus? Not really. The route crosses the Po Valley on broad and straight roads to finish in Ferrari’s town on an even broader home straight. Okay, Italian cobbles cover a stretch of 450 metres just before the flamme rouge, but these are not Paris-Roubaix material. The home straight is on 8 metres wide and smooth asphalt.
Pascal Ackermann won two out of three sprints in this Giro. He powered to victory in the 2nd and rain-soaked 5th stage, while Gaviria won the 3rd stage after Viviani’s relegation. Calb Ewan outgunned Viviani and Ackermann in stage 8.
