Last year, the Giro d’Italia saw a mesmerizing finale with four riders within 1 minute of the pink jersey. In the last stage, which was an ITT, Jos van Emden took the win while his compatriot Tom Dumoulin retook the overall lead and thus the overall victory. A similar scenario is unlikely with a parade stage on the last day of action.
The route is flat and undemanding. Start and finish of the lap are on the Via dei Fori Imperiali, halfway the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia. The first half goes through the old city, via Circus Maximus to the Colosseum, while the second half is a straight line to the finish.
In 2016 the Giro concluded with a criterium in Turin – Nikias Arndt sprinted to the win. In 2015’s last stage Iljo Keisse and Luke Durbridge took the peloton by surprise and managed to outperform the chasing pack. The Belgian rider won the two-up sprint.
The first three riders on the line win time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the last of two intermediate sprints (at kilometre 46.0 and at kilometre 69.0) comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.

Most exciting race ever! Chris Froome is the greatest cyclist and no cheat. Definitely no Lance Armstrong who nearly ruined the sport for me. People need to get over themselves and stop being so nasty and just enjoy the race. It was nail biting and I really felt for Simon Yates who is a great cyclist a good sport. I hope he wins the Giro one day and as he is so young I’m sure he will. Thankyou to all the teams and riders who have kept me glued to my seat for three weeks. Can’t wait for the Tour de France!
