Giro 2017 Favourites stage 13: Sprinters battle it out

Yes, it's likely for sprinters to battle it out in the 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia. At the same time it will be their last chance to shine. (Slideshow route/profile)

After stage 13 the Giro is a race for climbers and GC guys, but today the route is as flat as a pancake. So this is the last chance for sprinters to shine. Tomorrow it’s Oropa-time and stage 15 runs to a Tour of Lombardy-finish in Bergamo before the last week features one ITT and five challenges in the high mountains.

We can expect the fast men to call it quits after the finish in Tortona. And think of a better way to bow out of the Giro with a stage win…

Four races in this year’s Giro boiled down to a bunch sprint. The 2nd stage was won by André Greipel ahead of Roberto Ferrari and Jasper Stuyven, while Fernando Gaviria outsprinted Jakub Mareczko and Sam Bennett in the 5th stage and in the 12th stage. Caleb Ewan was fastest in stage 7.

Gaviria is the most successful rider in the pack, winning three stages. After a strong QuickStep performance, the echelon marked leg to Cagliria came down to a Gaviria stint too .
