Race report
Gamper, Van Moer, Garrison and Gautier are the first attackers to open a small gap. The peloton agrees and the four carve out a lead of 5 minutes.
Van Moer is on the hunt for KOM points and he crests the Côte de Bergonne and Côte du Château de Buron in first position. The Flemish rider pushes on alone after that last climb and he adds more points to his tally at the Col de la Croix des Gardes.
Gautier and Gamper rejoin Van Moer in the descent and the three cross the line in Issoire for the first time. On the second double ascent of the Côte de Bergonne and Côte du Château de Buron Van Moer extends his KOM lead.
Van Moer goes solo in the last ascent of the Côte de Bergonne. He reaches the summit of the last climb, Côte du Château de Buron, 1 minute ahead of the peloton. Which is enough for the stage victory and leader’s jersey.
