Race report
Rémi Cavagna is the most active rider in the opening phase of the race, but the Frenchman is not awarded a place in the breakaway. The attackers on duty are Daniel Oss, Bob Jungels, Pierre Latour, Davide Formolo, Christopher Juul-Jensen, Søren Kragh Andersen, Jasha Sütterlin, Guy Niv and Maxime Chevalier, who jump clear after more than 35 kilometres of hard racing.
Formolo is the best classified rider at the front, trailing leader Roglic by 4.54 minutes.
The attackers tackle the Madeleine 4 minutes ahead of the main group. Formolo and Latour are the strongest climbers, while the Italian goes alone in the second half of the climb. He reaches the summit with a lead of almost 6 minutes over the peloton.
On the finish climb the gap falls to 2 minutes when Kämna goes after the lone leader inside the last 6 kilometres. Thomas and Uran lose contact after an acceleration in the peloton.
Kämna can’t bridge across and Formolo solos to the win, while Martínez attacks inside the last kilometres. Sivakov closes the gap with Roglic on his wheel before the GC leader sprints to victory. Pinot crosses the line in third.
Roglic extends his lead with a time bonus of 6 seconds. Moreover, Bernal crosses the line after 9 seconds because he loses contact after the acceleration in the finale.
