In last year’s Vuelta 159 riders managed to reach Madrid. A total of 29 rider were forces to quit, the first one being Warren Barguil. This year’s mountain king in the Tour de France abandoned in stage 3. Other prominent riders who didn’t finish in Madrid were Steven Kruijswijk, Miguel Ángel López, Philippe Gilbert, Tejay van Garderen and Samuel Sánchez. In a way the latter is the first rider rider to abandon in 2017. After all, he was due to ride the Vuelta for BMC. Loïc Vliegen replaces him.
