Vuelta 2014: Results
Edition 2014 of La Vuelta opened on August 23 in Jerez de la Frontera with a TTT and after 3,000 kilometres of racing the riders arrived on 14 September in Santiago de Compostela. Since Nairo Quintana abandoned in stage 11 the GC battle raged mainly between Alberto Contador, Chris Froome and Alejandro Valverde. El Pistolero eventually took the win, adding two tough mountain stages to it. It was his third overall victory in his home-race.

Malori takes rainy ITT, Contador winner 2014 Vuelta
Sunday, August 14 - La Vuelta closes with a time trial in 9.7 kilometres in Santiago de Compostela. The first 100 riders race on a dry route, the rest is at a disadvantage when the heavens open. Italian Champion Adriano Malori is fastest, whilst Alberto Contador is the best in La Vuelta 2014

Contador takes stage and Vuelta atop Ancaras
Saturday, September 13 - Over a distance of 185 kilometres riders head in stage 20 to the Puerto de Ancares, a horse category arrival. Before getting to the bottom the climb they have to crest 3rd, 2nd and 1st category mountains. The Ancaras climb brings spectacle with attacks by Purito and Froome, but Contador outsmarts each and everyone and takes both the stage and the Vuelta 2014.Read more »
Adam Hansen powers to solo-win
Friday, September 12 - Firm tailwinds aIong the coast will speed up the 180.5 kilometres stage between Salvaterra de Mino and Cangas. With 15 kilometres left riders are to crest a 2nd category climb and then it's mainly downhill. Degenkolb survives the climb, but it's not enough because power-rider Hansen takes his chances with 5 kilometres to go and soloes to victory. Degenkolb comes in second.

Aru takes 2nd stage win, Froome 2nd in GC
Thursday, September 11 - Stage 18 takes the riders mostly along the Spanish westcoast tot arrive after 157 kilometres of racing in Monte Castrove. The last 30 kilometres delivers twice the same 2nd category climb. Half way the last climb Fabio Aru attacks en he is joined by Chris Froome. The two work together to hold off the upcoming Spaniards Contador, Valverde and Rodríguez. The British/Italian collaboration pays off and Aru takes the stage, whilst Froome is now second in the overall. Contador sticks to his red jersey.

John Degenkolb powers to 4th win
Wednesday, September 10 - The 174 kilometres ride between Ortigueira and Coruña is mainly on the spectacular Galician coastline. Loads a short climbs, but no real climbing today. Whilst a breakaway of five is history in the final kilometre it's 'strong' John Degenkolb outpowering Michael Matthews and Fabian Cancellara.
