Tour of Oman 2015

Edition 6 of the Tour of Oman was held February 17-22. Mountains, hills, sprints, it was all on the menu. Rafael Valls took the overall by winning the stage to Green Mountain, making the Spaniard the successor of Chris Froome.

Valls was a suprise winner with Vincenzo Nibali, Tejay van Garderen and Alejandro Valverde also at the start. The day after his Green Mountain victory another hilly ride, featuring the 20% Bousher Alamrat, was neutralized due to harsh weather. This was good news for Valls and in the closing stage he secured his overall win.

Brändle takes stage 6, Valls the overall

In 133 kilometres the pack is racing to Muscat to finish at Matrah Corniche. Four escapees colour the race and not only that, they go for glory when they manage to stay away. Matthias Brändle outperforms his companions and solos to victory. Rafael Valls wins the Tour of Oman 2015.

Stage 5 is Neutralized

Due to violent sandstorms the course of the 5th stage was adjusted at first. The parcours would be the final circuit thrice, with the Bousher Alamrat to be climbed six times. Since temperatures are up to a soaring 41°C the race is now neutralized until the finish line.

Rafael Valls wins stage 4 at Green Mountain

The stage to Green Mountain is often decisive in the Tour of Oman. Two Belgian riders are on the attack, Gijs Van Hoecke and Stijn Vandenbergh, but they are reeled in just before climbing Green Mountain. Nibali is the first to attack, but once BMC starts setting the pace for Van Garderen the Italian is dropped. The American can't finish the job since Rafael Valls outpowers him on the top.

Kristoff outsprints Guardini in stage 3

The Al Mussanah-Ak Mussanah stage is 158 flat kilometres long. Just like everyday Belgium Van Meirhaeghe is in the break, he is accompanied by his compatriot Van Hecke and Italian Tonelli. With 16 km's left the pack is back together again and it all boils down to a bunch sprint, with Alexander Kristoff besting Andrea Guardini.

Cancellara outpowers Valverde

In 195 kilometres stage 2 takes the riders from Al Hazm Castle to Al Bustan. The finale brings two small climbs while the finish is 5 kilometres after cresting the second one. Four escapees colour the race, but once the climbs loom it's up to the big names. Fabian Cancellara outpowers Alejandro Valverde on the line, while Peter Sagan finishes fifth. The Swiss is the new leader. Nibali disappoints with arriving in the second group at 46 seconds.
