Ruta del Sol 2022 Route stage 5: Huesa - Chiclana de Segura
Huesa is the birth place of Enrique Martínez Heredia, the promising Spaniard who won the young riders classification of the 1976 Tour de France. His promise never fully blossomed, although he is double Spanish Champion who also won a La Vuelta stage.
It's a tough opening in the race from Huesa to Chiclana de Segura. The riders tackle two unclassified climbs plus the Puerto Fuente del Gallo (6.7 kilometres at 5.9%) and Puerto de Tíscar (5.4 kilometres at 5.9%) in the first 30 kilometres.
The route then enters a quiet phase with only the short and steep climb to La Iruela standing out.
After 92 kilometres the route goes up again. The 8.1 kilometres climb at 4.4% to Villacarrillo is shortly followed by the Alto de Iznatoraf (2.6 kilometres at 8.4%). Still almost 40 kilometre remaining at the top.
On flat to rolling roads the riders head for the final climb to Chiclana de Segura, which is 6.4 kilometres long and averages 5.6%.
