Ruta del Sol 2016
Edition 62 of the Ruta del Sol was won by Alejandro Valverde after a brave show of power in the Queen Stage on the last day. Being 22 seconds down in GC, the 35-year old attacked on the 14.5 kilometres closing climb up Alto Peñas Blancas to power to the stage win. Leader Tejay van Garderen couldn't cope and finished second, while Bauke Mollema was the third rider on the podium after finishing second place in the Queen Stage.

Van Garderen bests Kelderman by 2 seconds in ITT and new leader
At 21 kilometres, stage 4 in the Ruta del Sol is an ITT on hilly terrain with a steepest ramp at 15% and an uphill arrival. Tejay van Garderen takes a close win, only 2 seconds ahead of Wilco Kelderman. The American is the new leader with the Dutchman breathing down his neck.Read more »
Sprint victory Gatto in stage 3, Ben Swift new leader
At 158 kilometres, stage 3 in the Ruta del Sol leads over four mountain tops to arrival place El Padul. With two escapees being caught in the last kilometre the race boils down to a sprint of a decimated pack with Oscar Gatto fastest. Ben Swift is the new leader.Read more »
Bouhanni to take stage 2 and GC lead
At 177 kilometres, Ruta del Sol's 2nd stage in 2016 leads to Córdoba. A climb with 20 kilometres left shatters the peloton, but once in the streets of Cordoba around fourty riders are back in the race. Nacer Bouhanni is fastest as he bests Fabio Felline on the line. In doing so the Frechman also takes the overall lead.Read more »
Daniele Bennati sprints to glory in stage 1
The 1st stage of the Ruta del Sol leads to Seville. Four escapees hold their ground deep into the finale, but with 2 kilometres left they are brought back. Daniele Bennati outsprints each and everyone and powers to the first leaders jersey in the 2016 Ruta del Sol. Bert Van Lerberghe and José Juan Lobato are second and third.Read more »
